With a sold out audience of 140 campers, The Pistons Academy “Ultimate Hoops Week” started off with a slam dunk as Pistons star center Andre Drummond made a surprise appearance.
“With 140 kids in attendance, we are going to have some amazing games this week,” Said Pistons Director of Fan Development Geo Thomas, “Already we have had some buzzer beaters and fantastic finishes.”
White Division star Max Adamczyk proved that point early Monday as he took a tough drive to the basket with just seconds to go in an 11-11 tie. He was fouled as the buzzer sounded and calmly made his first free-throw for the win. “It was a great finish to a great game,” said Camp Director Aaron Smith, “The kids were really into it and mobbed Max after he hit the shot. It was cool to see!”
Most of the day was spent evaluating players and forming teams for 5-on-5 and 4-Ball (a shooting contest). Then around 2pm, Andre Drummond made a surprise visit to the camp. To his surprise, Andre received a standing ovation from the campers and staff. He answered questions from the campers and then hung around and put on an amazing dunk show which drew even more applause. “He had some wicked slams,” said 10-year-old camper Jake Thomas, “He’s a beast!”
Tuesday’s camp will feature the Pistons Drum Line who will perform for campers right away. Parents and friends are welcome to watch the performance which will begin around 9:10am.
